How is Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) treated?
The diaphragmatic hernia is a condition when there is a compression over the lungs from the abdominal organs through an aperture in the diaphragm. Fortunately, this condition is now curable thanks to the achievements of modern medicine. In Dr. Shterev Hospital in collaboration with pediatric surgeons from other hospitals, we give a chance of the babies with this diagnosis. How is that possible?
The fetal surgeon inserts through the fetus mouth a balloon-catheter and blows it out under the vocal cords. The procedure is performed through a fetoscope with 3.3 millimeters in diameter. The interventions help the fetus lungs to develop and lead to successful delivery and then a traditional surgery correction of the diaphragm hernia.
The first insertion of a balloon-catheter in Bulgaria was performed in 2015 from Dr. Petya Chaveeva, Prof. Atanas Shterev and Prof. Nicola Persico from the University hospital L. Mangiagalli in Milan, Italy. The happily saving of the baby was possible thanks to the perfect collaboration of the fetal surgeons, the pediatric surgeons and the neonatologist in several hospitals.
