In Vitro fertilization - accents

- In Vitro fertilization (IVF) was successfully implemented for the first time in Bulgaria in 1987

- The IVF methodology is used in a variety of cases when the natural fertilization is impossible or hardly troubled

- “Through the progress of reproductive medicine and the application of assisted reproductive techniques in the last 30 years, the so-called then hopeless medical cases now have the chance to fulfill the dream of a successful pregnancy”, Prof. Atanas Shterev

In Vitro - general information

IVF is a methodology of artificial fertilization of an oocyte in a laboratory environment.

The first attempt for In Vitro Fertilization was back in 1890 when the Cambridge University Professor Walter Heep successfully implanted rabbit embryos.

In his novel Brave New World (1932) Aldous Huxley quite believably describes the In Vitro Fertilization as it is applied today.
The first IVF baby in the world is Louise Brown, born in 1978 in the United Kingdom with the assistance of Dr. Robert Edwards and Dr. Patrick Steptoe.
Ten years later in 1987 IVF is successfully implemented in Bulgaria by Prof. Atanas Shterev and Prof. Iliya Vatev.
